The Cat Empire - Other Australian releases - Demo II (2000)

Stolen from ryanmonro.info discography page...

Recorded: Ollie’s sister’s bedroom, mid-2000.

More trio tunes. Recorded over a few days. Ollie recorded it. A few nervous “I may have lost the whole session” moments.

Also acquired the track listing:
1. The Traveller (O McGill)
2. Rhyme and Reason (F Riebl)
3. The Quiet One (F Riebl)
4. The Chord (F Riebl)
5. The Shue (F Riebl)
6. Conspiracy Theory (F Riebl)
7. Song for the Day (F Riebl)
8. The Plan (F Riebl)
9. Green Ollie (O McGill)
10. The Rumbling (F Riebl)
11. All That Talking (F Riebl)

And a pretty picture:

EDIT: as I commented below (might be useful? who knows)

The Traveller ('Traveler') and Green Ollie can be heard in the Making of Two Shoes video clip, available on the Two Shoes Bonus DVD. They both are noted in the credits of this mini-documentary.

Rhyme and Reason was available on the old flash based website (2003/4 era), as well as a short piece being at the start/end of the On The Attack DVD credits. If i'm not mistaken (although it's been a while), All That Talking was also on the old website... (or maybe that was The Cat Empire from the first demo release) - edit: just occured to me that The Cat Empire from the first demo is obviously an early version of All That Talking... had the track for that many years and it never clicked until right now.

If i'm also not mistaken, a short portion of The Quiet One is featured in the On The Attack 'Encore' menu (you have to enter and exit a few times, I can't remember the exact sequence to get it to play).

The Shue I haven't heard anywhere at all, although when listening it gives me subtle vibes of being an early version of Chariot (theres this one keyboard riff extremely similar, if not exactly the same as the chorus trumpet line in Chariot).

Conspiracy Theory may very well be an early version of 'The Conspiracy' (due to the name), which was released commercially as 'Siente' on Cities.

I *think* that Song For The Day from Tapes, breaks and out-takes may be the version from this demo. But I could be completely wrong. But it makes sense to me...

And lastly, The Rumbling is probably an early version of the old live intro that was introduced as 'Rumbling'... lol. Also appeared a few times on the 10th Anniversary Tour (Sydney's Enmore show got it if I recall correctly).

confirms and debunks a few of the above ^

  1. Whoaaaa! Any idea on if these songs are unique or later became something else? (besides the obvious ones that the titles didn't change.) And better yet, any way to find these?

  2. All the tunes are unique recordings... some have of course been re-worked and appear on later albums and The Traveller, The Chord and The Plan were previously recorded in the Sound Lounge a few months before and appear on the first demo. Unlikely you'll ever find this one anywhere. A few years ago I was informed that Ollie still has a bunch of them in is (not his sister's) own bedroom at his family home.

  3. NB Those three versions ARE different to the first demo though by the way!
